Planning on buying vertical blinds for your windows and or doors? If so, you need to make sure that you know what you will need in order to install them on your own.
The first thing you need to do before going out and buying vertical blinds is measure the area that you want the new window blinds for. You can then take those measurements to your local home improvement store and see if the measurements are standard. If they are not then you will have to decide where you want to order your special made blinds.
Once your vertical blinds are in and you have brought them home for installation make sure you have specific tools and hardware items in order to be able to successfully install your window blinds.
Important tools that will be needed to install your blinds are the following: measuring tape that can be metal or made of wood, a screw driver that has a flat head, some finishing nails and a hammer, a drill that has what is called a hex head bit that is one quarter inch in size, a level to make sure everything is straight and even, scissors for trimming of cord if needed, wall anchors for dry wall and two other drill bits one that is one sixteenth and the other being three sixteenth of a inch you also will need to have a pencil handy.
The hardware that you should have for the blinds would be some brackets, mounting clips and screws, the headrail, vanes or louvers to attach at the end, a chain and clip as well as a cord and cord weight.
The two different mounting styles differ somewhat in the way that they are installed. There is an inside mount that goes on the inside of the windowsill and the outside mount that goes over the window on the wall.
You will not need the mounting brackets if you are installing blinds that have inside mounts. Remove the brackets from your blinds, keeping the screws and throw the brackets away. You then need to keep the mounting clips for the window blinds and tighten the screws.
Now you are going to need mark both the valance and the area around the window. To mark the frame you need to hold the valance up over the frame itself and make sure it is the width of the valance that you mark. Where you have marked the width make sure to measure out an inch from the wall and make marks, this becomes the depth. Then you will need to center it by putting the clip over the third groove, which is about four inches from the end.
Put valance up and line the back of it with the marks for the depth. After this drill holes where the mounting marks have been made. Remember to use wall anchors if you are hanging the blinds on dry wall. Now, screw the screws into the clips, valance and the windowsill.
Once this is all done you can then put the headrail into place. Make sure that you have put the cord on the side that you want it to be on before going any further.
Outside mounting vertical blinds are done just a little differently than the inside mounting type. Start by measuring the length of your louvers and marking the height on your wall by adding two inches to the overall length of the lovers. Now you can center the headrail of the blinds by placing the headrail where you have your wall markings, you will now need to make a two inch mark that is made about four inches in from each end. Make sure marks for the brackets are evenly spaced.
Next you will need to hold the brackets up to the two-inch marks and mark an area for the mounting holes that will go into the wall. Now drill holes into these marks. Make sure to use wall anchors if you are mounting into dry wall. You will now screw brackets into place making sure that you use two screws for each bracket you use.
Now you need to snap in the headrail, before doing so though make sure the screws for the mountings have been screwed in securely. Now you can take your screwdriver and place between the headrail and release tab.
You need to attach each louver individually to what is called the stem slot. Push the louver up into the slot and then pull back down securing the louver. Note that if the louvers are cloth; make sure that all hem sides face the same direction.
Be sure to attach the cord with a weight that is secured and fastened to the wall. This is a security measure to keep children and pets from getting strangled in the cords. If this is an inside mount then the cord should be attached to the sill at the back.
If the cord is too long you can adjust it and tie a knot where you want it to end and then cut off the excess cord and discard.
