Southwest Style Rugs – How to Add Flair

by Craig Chambers

Southwest style rugs can be brought into your interior room, regardless of your appointment. They are ideal when complementing Southwestern decor, but can create a great talking point in warming up the environment of any interior room that you choose. When trying to come up with your desired look, one of these rugs can act as a centerpiece.

If you are ready to introduce an area rug or two to your home, take some time to think about what you really need. Are you trying to fill a specific space, or defining an area within a room? If you were to center a Southwest style rug in between two, otherwise distinct seating areas, you could help to draw these areas together and make much better use of a larger space.

There are a variety of different types of Southwest style rugs, many of them could be construed as works of art by themselves. Indeed, it is not unusual to find truly unique, one-of-a-kind creations. In addition to applications as floor art, many of them can be used to hang as tapestries on your wall, further complementing your style.

While Southwest style rugs can be introduced into any home, regardless of your style of presentation, make sure that you do not end up with too busy an outcome. The brightly colored and highlighted rugs will not work too well if you already have a standout wallpaper design or your furniture fabric is less than neutral. As always, try and blend in for optimum effect.

Within the choice of Southwest style rugs available, you can look for products that originated either in the West or the Southwest and this tends to confuse people sometimes. Southwest styles tend toward dark blues or grays, while Western styles tend towards more primary blacks and reds, accented with grays.

These products are certainly designed to last and have been well constructed of quality materials. As many of them are made of beautiful, high-quality wool product, they do need to be protected. They are soft and durable but vulnerable to wear and damage if placed within high-traffic areas. As ever, you should avoid spilling any thing on them.

For a truly unique and one-of-a-kind look, choose Southwest style rugs made by native Indian tribes. These are the results of many, many hours of hard work and skill, using the wool from domestic sheep of the region. Think of the tradition and history that has been woven into these rugs as they are being made and you will feel the very spirit of the native people.

Certainly, if you are looking for enhancements to your rustic decor, ranch, log cabin or lodge, then Western tapestries or Southwest style rugs are absolutely ideal. They can be applied to any room, but if you have a creative eye you can match particular styles and patterns according to the ambiance of the room, its function and purpose.
