A Guide For Buying Replacement Double Glazing

by Matthew Kerridge

Replacement double glazing will reduce heat loss through your traditional windows. This means you can lower your energy bills and become more environmentally friendly. If you do not want to replace all of your windows, you have the option to choose the rooms that are the most expensive to heat in the winter.

Always check before you need planning permission before you buy replacement double glazing. All you need to do is ask you local council if your house is a listed building, you live in a conservation area or your neighbours ay object. Modern doubled glazed windows are available in lots of different designs and colours.

Do not use the Yellow Pages or newspaper advertisements to pick a replacement double glazing company. It is very easy to place an advert, have membership of a trade organisation, or display false accreditations and badges.

Make sure you find a reputable replacement double glazing company and that you independently check them out. It means nothing if you have heard of them. Adverts are easy to place and it is simple to close one company and open another one as well.

It is normal to pay a ten percent deposit. More than that is usually only asked if the windows are especially customised. It is not wise to pay more upfront but pay in stages according to when the work is completed, and hold onto the final payment until the work is completed to your satisfaction. There is a price below which you will compromise on quality so don't opt for the cheapest company. This applies to haggling on the price too. Unprofessional suppliers will give you a large discount, but you will pay for it eventually.

Check with the company how long they will take to deliver and ask for this to be stated in the contract. This applies to how long the work will take after delivery too.

When paying the deposit use your credit card, not cash. By doing this you will be covered by the Consumer Credit Act should anything go wrong. Try to use your credit card for the whole payment too; if the company is against this, ask them for a valid reason. Should you feel you have been duped, you have 30 days to file your claim. Ensure you have all the proof; documentation, photo's and so on available to give the card company.

Don't be fooled by thinking that just because you have a contract you are fine. You need to really understand it including the boring small print. If possible ask a lawyer to check it for you and he or she can give you independent advice.

A good way to find a supplier is through word-of-mouth. Speak to previous customers, have a look at a friend's house with replacement double glazing. Be prepared to have to wait as the best companies often are busy. If a company jumps at the chance to install your replacement windows be a little wary as unscrupulous firms will rush your job, even if they do not have the staff available. They often move workers around, have poor supervision and compromise on quality.

Always ask if the replace double glazing company has the usual industry accreditations and that they have the ISO safety standard kite mark.
